My name is Seongji Jang
장성지. You’re welcome to use any pronouns you prefer, though I personally like ‘they/them’ for formal situations.

I was born and raised until the age of 19 in a small village inside the development-restricted zone on the border of Seoul South Korea, surrounded by mountains, forests, vinyl greenhouses, rice paddies, and fields. The village had no bookstore or hospital, but it had two small grocery stores, two stationery shops, one barbershop, one beauty salon, one pharmacy, one playground, and an elementary school with six grades, each grade having three classes and up to 30 students per class.

I graduated from the Department of Animation in Korea, then moved to Berlin, Germany(2014) , where I graduated from the Department of Stage Design. Currently, I work as a freelance stage designer, scenographer, and multidisciplinary artist based in Berlin, active in Germany, South Korea, and Thailand.

I have experience designing scenic environment for operas, theatres, movie sets, exhibition. I worked as comic autor and graphic designer for various webzines and theatre/movie productions, character/preproduction design for animation productions, and made hand drawn animations for scenic and flat spaces since 2008.

recent long-term project ‘on the palm, sleeping soul’ is a research and interview based work, partly performative and curatorial. first interview and gathering site was in thailand. with Sascha Malina Hoffmann, we organized and performed a lecture performance ‘handjob’ collaborating with 5 more artists working in different fields in Habibi Kiosk in Munich. ‘handjob’ is about hand and desire, we explore and talk from anatomic facts how hands feel and move, to sexualizing hands as queer, sexwork and nail art, massage, waacking and punking.

I am interested in observing the diversity of violence and the various ways to resist them. I feel disappointed that current art can often only sustainable as a face of capital and the state. How can we resist violence, demand change to the system without getting stuck in the sticky web of capitalism and nationalism? How can we overcome the death of workers, class entrenchment, discrimination, and nationalist violence without large capital and influence? How can small movements change large systems? With these questions in mind, I hope to meet people who do such work, interview them, document it, collect their work, and contribute to creating tools. Outside of the labor hours necessary for my survival, I focus on this personal work, which I carry out through electronic magazines, performances, and workshops.

저는 직업인으로서는 시노그라프, 비디오, 그래픽디자이너로 일하고 있고, 개인으로서는 리서치, 글쓰기, 퍼포먼스와 애니메이션을 토대로 한 복합형 미술 작업을 하고 있습니다.

시노그라프로서는 연극,오페라,퍼포먼스,댄스,영화 세트 디자인, 전시 디자인을 해왔습니다.
2010년부터 포스터,브로슈어,책자 디자인 일을 해왔고, 캐릭터 디자이너, 스토리/비디오보드 아티스트로서 애니메이션 회사에서, 그리고 웹진에 만화와 삽화를 연재했습니다.

가장 최근의 <on the palm, sleeping soul> 은 리서치와 퍼포먼스, 큐라토리얼 작업이 포함되어 있는 프로젝트입니다.
태국에서 가장 먼저 인터뷰와 게더링을 한 후, 사샤 말리나 호프만과 함께 렉쳐 퍼포먼스 <HANDJOB>을 다섯 명의 다른 예술가들과 협업해 뮌헨의 Habibi Kiosk에서 기획, 공연했습니다. <HANDJOB>은 손과 욕망에 대해서 손이 어떻게 느끼고 움직이는지에 대한 해부학부터, 퀴어의 손에 대한 성애화, 성노동, 네일 아트, 마사지, waacking 과 punkging 등에 대해서 이야기합니다.

저는 서울 경계선의 개발제한구역 안에 있는 작은 마을에서 나고 19세까지 자랐으며, 그 마을은 산과 숲, 비닐하우스, 논과 밭에 둘러싸여 있었습니다. 마을에는 서점도 병원도 없었지만, 작은 구멍가게 두 곳, 문구점 두 곳, 이발소 한 곳, 미용실 한 곳, 약국 한 곳, 놀이터 하나와 1학년부터 6학년까지 각 3반, 한 반에 최대 30명씩 있는 초등학교가 있었습니다.

저는 한국에서 애니메이션과를 졸업한 뒤 2014년에 독일 베를린으로 이주해 무대미술과(학·석사)를 졸업했습니다. 현재는 베를린을 거점으로 독일, 한국, 태국에서 프리랜서 무대미술가, 시노그래퍼, 그리고 예술가로 활동하면서, 오페라, 연극, 영화 세트, 전시 디자인, 만화, 그래픽 디자인, 애니메이션 제작을 위한 캐릭터 및 프리프로덕션 디자인, 무대와 평면 공간을 위한 평면 영상 디자인을 해왔습니다.

예술가로서의 가장 최근의 장기간 리서치 기반 프로젝트인 ‘on the palm, sleeping soul’은 연구와 인터뷰 기반의 작업으로, 일부는 퍼포먼스와 큐레이션의 형태를 띠고 있습니다. 첫 인터뷰와 모임 장소는 태국, 치앙마이였습니다. 이후 Sascha Malina Hoffmann과 함께 뮌헨의 하비비 키오스크에서 5명의 서로 다른 분야 예술가들과 협력하여 렉쳐 퍼포먼스 ‘handjob’을 기획하고 공연했습니다. ‘handjob’은 손과 욕망에 관한 작업으로, 해부학적 사실에서부터 손이 느끼고 움직이는 방식, 퀴어, 성노동, 네일 아트, 마사지, 왁킹과 펑킹에 이르기까지 손을 다양한 관점으로 탐구하고 이야기합니다.

저는 혐오와 폭력의 다양성을 관찰하고 그것에 저항하는 여러 방법에 관심이 있습니다. 현재, 예술과 디자인은 국가주의와 자본의 얼굴로서 기능해야만 지속 가능해 보입니다. 우리는 자본주의와 국가주의라는 끈끈한 그물에 갇히지 않고 어떻게 혐오와 폭력에 저항하고 변화를 촉구하며 압력을 가할 수 있을까요? 대자본과 영향력이 없이 노동자의 죽음, 계급 고착화, 차별, 민족주의 폭력을 어떻게 극복할 수 있을까요? 작은 움직임이 어떻게 큰 시스템을 변화시킬 수 있을까요? 저는 이러한 질문들을 가지고, 그런 작업을 하는 사람들을 만나 인터뷰하고 기록하며, 그들의 작업을 수집하고 도구를 만드는 데 기여하고자 전자 잡지, 퍼포먼스, 워크숍 등을 진행하고 있습니다.
